Even if you have a flawless cat-eye and the perfect shade of lipstick, your entire look can be thrown off if you don’t properly address your eyebrows. Eyebrow makeup can be tricky to master, but with a bit of practice, you can take your look from glam to BAM! With the proper shaping and shading, your eyebrows can add a level of drama and sophistication that will make you stand out whether you’re meeting a client or attending a gala.
DO: Clean up your brows in advance
Shaping is important, and should not be left until the last minute. Tweeze or wax in advance so your skin has time to heal. Hair removal can leave your skin swollen and red for at least a few hours. If tweezing, start from the bottom of the brow and work your way up. You should generally only remove the obvious hairs to avoid overplucking. Step back from the mirror every now and then to keep an eye on your progress.
DON’T: Make them too thin
Overtweezing your brows can leave you with too little to work with. If you have thicker brows, consider visiting a professional for a wax. The stylist can help ensure you get the shape you want. Your eyebrows should start in line with the inner corner of your eye and end just past the outer corner. If you were to draw a line from the tip of your nose to the highest point of your brow, the line should pass through the outer edge of your pupil when looking straight ahead.
DO: Add dimension with different shades
When filling in your brows, the inner areas should be the lightest, with darker pencil or powder used on the arch and tip off your brows. You can create even more definition by running concealer along the lower edge of your brows with a small brush. This will create a sharp edge for a bold, put-together look.
DON’T: Go too dark or too light
The shade you choose is important. A good rule of thumb is to use a pencil or powder three shades darker than your natural hair color. Anything too dark, too light or the wrong shade will make your brows appear unnatural. Select your makeup carefully – unless you’re attending a costume party.
