Repeat after me: change is good. It really is, and my favorite change of the year is always when the sun comes out and transitions winter into spring. Wardrobes ditch heavy sweaters for floral patterns and budding blooms line every street. With all this change, it’s important to remember to renew your skincare routine too. There’s no better time to start prepping your complexion for the impending (and highly welcomed) rising temps that lie ahead. Here are Skin1’s top tips to help stave off vernal skin-related freak-outs.
Consider a New Cleanser
Warmer air means oilier skin. That oil is essential in the winter, because it leaves a residue of fats on your skin and lips that act as a barrier to winter’s harsh air and dryness. But you don’t need all that oil in the spring. There are mostly three kinds of moisturizers: creamy, foaming, and normal. Switch to a normal cleanser or look into a foaming cleanser to remove extra oils if you have oily skin this spring.
Update Your Exfoliation Routine
Clean your skin like you clean your winter wardrobe: out with the old, in with the new — new skin, that is. Start exfoliating your skin more in spring. A little extra exfoliation will not only brighten your skin, but also remove old, dry layers of skin from the harsh, cold winter. You should increase your exfoliation routine to twice a week to ensure that old skin is gone, giving new skin the chance to better absorb any topical treatments.
Buy a Reliable Sunscreen
Be vigilant about protecting your skin from harmful UV rays even on the cloudy, rainy April days ahead of us. Apply every morning and reapply every two hours that you’re outside.
Always rotate your moisturizers from season to season. Your skin does eventually get used to the products you use. A lighter moisturizer, rather than a creamier one, will balance your changing skin.
Get an Eye Cream
Get ready for spring by adding an eye cream. Eye creams are essential in warm months. Eyes squinting to avoid the sun can cause those dreaded crow’s feet around your eyes. Throwing in an eye cream with SPF protection into your spring skincare routine will give your skin that perfect glow.
