Looking for a way to stop or reverse your skin’s aging process? Be sure to include peptides in your list of must-have ingredients! You can find age-defying peptides in wrinkle-fighting creams, serums and under-eye products.
What are Peptides?
Peptides are chains of amino acids that are the building blocks of skin proteins. Probably the best-known protein naturally found in the skin is collagen. Collagen’s purpose is to maintain the supple, taut appearance of healthy skin. However, aging and environmental factors (such as sun exposure and stress) break down these natural proteins, causing wrinkles to form. Peptides have the ability to signal cells to make more collagen and repair damaged cell structures, helping to keep skin plump and firm.
How to Use Peptides
Peptides used in skin care are lab-created to address specific concerns from the inside out. When applied topically to the skin, they penetrate the top layer of skin and send a signal to produce more collagen, which results in more youthful, supple skin.
While there are many types of peptides, those found in skin care products generally fall into three categories:
Pentapeptides contain five peptide units linked together to stimulate production of collagen and hyaluronic acid – two natural skin components that are lost as people age, resulting in wrinkles and sagging skin. Basically pentapeptides signal the skin to stop breaking down collagen, thus slowing down the aging process. Palmitoyl pentapeptides are the most popular of this type of peptide and can be found in a variety of skin creams including DermaQuest A-M& R Facial Recovery and G.M. Collin Retinol Advanced + Matrixyl + Q10.
Copper Peptides help deliver copper to skin, which is important to wound healing, and also help stimulate collagen production and act as an antioxidant. Find them in Neova Night Therapy and Glymed Plus Cell Science Eye Calm, to name a few popular products.
Neuropeptides affect neurotransmitters in skin, which causes nerve cells to relax, making wrinkles disappear and smoothing skin. Find neuropeptides in Peter Thomas Roth FIRMx Growth Factor Neuropeptide Serum and Glymed Plus Cell Science Stem Cell Power Serum.
How Quickly Do They Work?
While a few peptides provide immediate results (generally the neuropeptides), most peptides take some time to work. In general, results will become noticeable after about a month of routine use. However, the amount of time needed to see results depends on your skin’s specific situation and type. For some, results can take up to three months.
Using a peptide cream and/or serum over a long period of time will work best. Different product consistencies work differently, even if the ingredients are exactly the same. While peptide creams are beneficial, their thick consistency may not be able to fully penetrate the skin, thus reducing the effectiveness of active ingredients. Lighter serums allow the peptides and other active ingredients to penetrate the skin more quickly, producing more noticeable results. Incorporating both a peptide cream and serum into your daily routine can help achieve more noticeable results.
